The EA-6 evolved from the A-6 airframe and was designed as an all purpose electronic countermeasures aircraft.  In a typical strike package, attack aircraft such as A-6s, A-7s, or F/A-18s would be accompanied by one or two EA-6s which provide pinpoint jamming and electronic countermeasures, ensuring the attackers got to and from the target area.
